The municipality of Stockholm has a population of nearly 1 million but the city itself sprawls out over neighbouring municipalities and totals 1.6 million. The greater Stockholm region (län) has 2.5 million inhabitants. The city stretches across over a dozen islands where lake Mälaren flows out into the Baltic Sea. Stockholm is surrounded by a beautiful archipelago both out in the Baltic Sea, but also in Mälaren.
Currency
Although part of EU, Sweden never converted to the Euro. As of the time of writing this, 1 € = 11.25 SEK (Swedish crowns) and 100 SEK = 8.89 €. Please be advised that this may change until October.
Arriving by air
Arlanda airport, ARN lies some 40 km north west of Stockholm. The airport website gives you all the information you need. There is also an app for Android and iPhone.
There are several ways to reach Stockholm from the airport.

- The easiest is probably going by coach (Flygbussarna, https://www.flygbussarna.se/). You will probably arrive at terminal 5 (if you’re travelling from abroad) but because of roadworks, the coaches depart only from terminal 4 (5-10 minute walk, indoors). Tickets are obtained through the website and are currently SEK 129.
- The train is faster, but more expensive. Arlanda Express (https://www.arlandaexpress.com/) takes 18 minutes but costs SEK 320.
- If you need to go cheap, take the SL-bus 579 from Arlanda to Märsta, where you change to the commuter train which will take you in to Stockholm. You can touch your credit/debit card on the bus to get a (non visible) ticket and this will be valid on the train too. Total cost: SEK 39. However, this takes a little longer.

Going from the central station to the hotel
The recommended hotel, Amaranten, lies just 10-15 minutes walk from the central station. You can shorten that by taking the blue line underground one station to Rådhuset, and exit at ”Kungsholmsgatan” This will bring you directly to the hotel.
Travelling in Stockholm:
You will receive a travel card valid for three days upon arrival at the conference venue. Use this to touch the green machines on buses, subways and commuter trains. Should you lose the card, you can buy single tickets for SEK 39 with your credit or debit card by touching it to the same green machines.
The Stockholm subway has 100 stations and more on its way.

Many stations have lots of artwork so do look around the stations when travelling. https://konst.sl.se/english/. I you like subways, check out the free Mini Metro game on Android or iPhone.
Typically, Google Maps will give you correct information about the quickest route to where you want to go, whether it is by bus, underground or any combination thereof. The official sevice provider is SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik) and you can find information and timetables on their website and apps for Android and iPhone.

This is as close as it gets, and cheap to! What’s the catch? It is a hostel, not a hotel. If you need to go cheap and can accept bunkbeds, this one is for you.

Please note that Madonna is performing in Stockholm on the Saturday so you may want to book early.
